Measles Vaccines

Measles: What You Need to Know

*If you think you have been exposed to Measles, please inform Erika Pitcher at the Allen County Health Department at (260) 449-4838.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, breathes, or talks — and the virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left a room. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 21 days after exposure and can include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a full-body rash.

The Good News: The Vaccine Works

The MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) vaccine is safe, proven, and highly effective. One dose is 93% effective at preventing measles, and two doses are 97% effective.

Most children receive the MMR vaccine at two ages:

  • First dose: 12–15 months
  • Second dose: 4–6 years

Teens and adults who have never been vaccinated should also receive two doses, at least 28 days apart.

Super Shot offers the MMR vaccine for children and adults of all ages.

Next Steps: What to Do If You've Been Exposed

Anyone experiencing symptoms should stay home and contact their health care provider immediately. Those with concerns about possible exposure can contact the Allen County Department of Health at (260) 449-7556.

  • The health department can come to your home and provide FREE measles testing.
  • Speaking with the health department allows their staff to follow up with everyone who was exposed in order to PREVENT others from getting sick.
  • If you are sick, it is important to get tested so you can be best supported medically.
